Bates Design Inc.
I decided to intern at Bates Design, which is located at 2031 S Indiana Ave, Chicago, IL 60616. Barbara Bates, who is my supervisor founded Bates Design and her philosophical statement quoted from her website is, “I believe that whether you’re size 2 or 22, if it’s presented right, the full-figured lady looks just as good as the smaller lady (Web).” Her boutique caters to women who want to look right in their figure while being age-appropriate. Of course times have changed and there are clients in the boutique who want to dress out of their age range.
Bates Design consists of Barbara, herself, as the leading boss, a handy receptionist/s, and her trusted tailors. I get to meet all her tailors, who are amazing at their work. Artus, who has been around with Barbara since she started, was very helpful in leading me with the work I was given. Salvador and Maggie have taught me new sewing techniques and fabric manipulations. These include and may have been used in my garments this semester: blind stitch, inside stitch, 3-D four pointed flowers, and the use of stitch witchery. There were also a Columbia graduate, another intern/worker, and other trusted tailors who either have their own business or work from home.
I get to help out Bates's 30-year Anniversary Fashion Show. I enjoyed my night at her show. Working hard in the morning and night. From setting up to dressing models, I had a lot of fun. Unfortunately, I was helping out backstage. I couldn't really enjoy the show and capture those beautiful moments.
